Acupuncture can relieve the symptoms of dry mouth in cancer patients who have been treated with radiation, say researchers from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
According to the press release announcing the study, people who have cancers of the head and neck typically receive large cumulative doses of therapeutic radiation and xerostomia develops after the salivary glands have been exposed to repeated doses.
For the study all patients were tested for saliva flow and asked to complete self-assessments and questionnaires related to their symptoms and quality of life before the first treatment, after completion of 4 weeks of acupuncture, and again 4 weeks later.
Cancer of any type is very demanding in both diagnosis and treatment, so it is interesting to read here that acupuncture has positive effects on the dry mouth complication of cancer treatment.
I like to know if acupuncture has any positive effects on swollen lymph nodes and the itching symptoms of lymphoma, a terrible supposedly skin cancer that eventually affects other organs.

I would have never thought acupuncture could help with dry mouth. That’s pretty impressive.
